Feeling Stuck?
One year ago today, the World Health Organization declared we were officially in a pandemic. The passage of time has been strange since then, moving at a snail’s pace and at hyperspeed all at once. How can this be? We’re all living on Corona Time…
It has been a challenging year, to put it mildly. We have all changed our lives to some degree, and it’s been easy to feel stuck, tense, and tight (and I’m not just talking about your shoulders!) Now we’re slowly moving toward another phase of “normal,” as the country gets vaccinated and restrictions begin to ease. Spring is right around the corner, and it’s easy to feel optimistic. Right? Yes, but…
We are not only transitioning into a new season, we’re transitioning into different–if not entirely new–lives. And change can be stressful!
Taking action is the only way to “undo” these feelings to get yourself unstuck. So, I’m extending an invitation to you to join BLOOM, my 4-week yoga and journaling series, which you can think of as an antidote to how you’re feeling; a sort of seasonal tune-up that uses the ancient wisdom of yoga, Ayurveda, Qigong, and other practices to reconnect with your inherent life force energy and make the transition into spring that much sweeter.
Embark on this 4-week adventure with me through the season of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal and regrowth. I’ll guide you through self-care rituals to help you maintain balance and remind us that we’re all part of the natural world.
Balance is Everything
In the natural world, seasonal transitions create imbalances in our physical, emotional, and mental bodies. How do we combat the imbalance?
YOGA. Move and breathe to relieve stagnation in the body and mind and get your natural energy f-l-o-w-i-n-g!
JOURNALING. Journaling is a perfect vehicle for achieving and maintaining balance. Mindful movement, writing, and meditation are practices that tame our monkey minds and stop mental chatter. By establishing a regular journaling practice, you’ll be setting aside a window of time each day specifically to address your monkey mind’s concerns.
RITUAL. Creating routine is another healthy way to stay present, and to learn to appreciate the natural world around us. And when we slow down and listen, we tune into that natural, inner wisdom that never steers us wrong.
DIET. Now’s the time to lighten up–including what we eat–and move away from the heavy, grounding, nourishing stews and root vegetables you’ve enjoyed all winter long. Bitter greens cooked with onions, garlic, and parsnips cleanse the body and provide counterbalance to congestion and heaviness in the digestive tract.
Emotional & Physical Stickiness
It’s normal right now to wake up stiff, more tired than usual, with headaches and neck pain, and feeling more anxious or depressed than usual. Our bodies are still in winter slowdown mode–and collectively we’re all still reeling from a year-long pandemic–so this year’s change from winter to spring might be one of the most tumultuous of all.
The heaviness of winter sticks with us both physically and emotionally. It’s a time to LIGHTEN UP (think “spring cleaning” from the inside out!). Moving your body is key to free up stagnate energy. As opposed to approaching it with a weekend warrior mentality of doing it all at once, consider easing into a regular practice. Two classes are offered each week which allows you to care for yourself in small ways throughout the week. Over the four-week period you’ll experience increased vitality.
Emerging out of Stillness and Tuning In
Winter is a time of rest and hibernation when nature retreats and builds up its reserves for the next cycle of seasons. It’s a quieter, more reflective time of the year when it’s easy to sleep in, stay at home, and rest.
Just as nature experiences seasonal transitions, internally we feel and experience each season. With change comes a natural disruption to balance. It’s important to recognize that when we transition from winter to spring, our system gets out of whack, setting our physical bodies up for dis-ease.
